Welcome to the latent print
Human Factors Analysis Classification System (HFACS)
This site was sponsored by and developed by NIST and Office of Law Enforcement Standards (OLES) to provide latent print managers and supervisors an easy and efficient way to determine and document the factors that led to human error in a latent print case. It is based on the work of Scott Shappell and Doug Weigmann but customized specifically for the types of error to be expected in latent print examination. Many of the reasons for error, or "nanocodes" in this section were the product of NIST Expert Working Group on Human Factors in Latent Print Examination meetings with numerous professionals in the forensic science discipline.
